Charles was the son of Count Gilbert Borromeo and Margaret Medici, sister of Pope Pius IV. He was born at the family castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore, Italy on October 2. He received the clerical tonsure when he was twelve and was sent to the Benedictine abbey of SS. Gratian and Felinus at Arona for his education.
In 1559 his uncle was elected Pope Pius IV and the following year, named him his Secretary of State and created him a cardinal and administrator of the see of Milan. He served as Pius' legate on numerous diplomatic missions and in 1562, was instrumental in having Pius reconvene the Council of Trent, which had been suspended in 1552. Charles played a leading role in guiding and in fashioning the decrees of the third and last group of sessions. He refused the headship of the Borromeo family on the death of Count Frederick Borromeo, was ordained a priest in 1563, and was consecrated bishop of Milan the same year. Before being allowed to take possession of his see, he oversaw the catechism, missal, and breviary called for by the Council of Trent. When he finally did arrive at Trent (which had been without a resident bishop for eighty years) in 1556, he instituted radical reforms despite great opposition, with such effectiveness that it became a model see. He put into effect, measures to improve the morals and manners of the clergy and laity, raised the effectiveness of the diocesan operation, established seminaries for the education of the clergy, founded a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for the religious instruction of children and encouraged the Jesuits in his see. He increased the systems to the poor and the needy, was most generous in his help to the English college at Douai, and during his bishopric held eleven diocesan synods and six provincial councils. He founded a society of secular priests, Oblates of St. Ambrose (now Oblates of St. Charles) in 1578, and was active in preaching, resisting the inroads of protestantism, and bringing back lapsed Catholics to the Church. He encountered opposition from many sources in his efforts to reform people and institutions.
He died at Milan on the night of November 3-4, and was canonized in 1610. He was one of the towering figures of the Catholic Reformation, a patron of learning and the arts, and though he achieved a position of great power, he used it with humility, personal sanctity, and unselfishness to reform the Church, of the evils and abuses so prevalent among the clergy and the nobles of the times. His feast day is November 4th.

Ninakualika katika tafakari yetu tukiwakumbuka marehemu wote. Kila mwaka tarehe 2 Novemba na zaidi sana mwezi Novemba ni siku na wakati ambao Mama Kanisa anatualika kwa ajili ya kuwaombea marehemu walioko toharani. Kwa kawaida siku zote mama Kanisa anasali kwa ajili ya marehemu mmoja mmoja au kikundi lakini leo anasali kwa ajili ya Kanisa zima la wateswa lililoko toharani. Huo ndio utajiri wa Kanisa linapogawa mastahili ya Msalaba wa Kristu kwa wahitaji walioko safarini kuelekea mbinguni.

Ninakualika katika tafakari yetu tukiwakumbuka marehemu wote. Kila mwaka tarehe 2 Novemba na zaidi sana mwezi Novemba ni siku na wakati ambao Mama Kanisa anatualika kwa ajili ya kuwaombea marehemu walioko toharani. Kwa kawaida siku zote mama Kanisa anasali kwa ajili ya marehemu mmoja mmoja au kikundi lakini leo anasali kwa ajili ya Kanisa zima la wateswa lililoko toharani. Huo ndio utajiri wa Kanisa linapogawa mastahili ya Msalaba wa Kristu kwa wahitaji walioko safarini kuelekea mbinguni.

Siku ya Marehemu wote!
Mwanafalsafa John Mbiti alisema “Niko kwa sababu tuko na kwa vile tuko, kwa hiyo niko ” Sentesi hii yanitafakarisha na kunisaidia kuhisi uwapo wa mwingine pembeni mwangu aliye mhitaji na hivi yaonesha hitaji la jumuiya. Katika siku ya leo Kanisa lahisi uwapo wa wahitaji ndio marehemu wote, ndio waliolala toharani wakitakaswa ili waingie mbinguni. Kanisa lahisi na kutekeleza ule muunganiko uliopo kati ya marehemu (kanisa la wateswa), watakatifu wa mbinguni (kanisa la washindi) na kanisa la wapiganaji ndio sisi na hivi kwa pamoja ni kanisa moja familia ya Mungu.
Fundisho tulilolisikia juu ya muunganiko wa kanisa shindi, kanisa la wateswa na kanisa la mahujaji linawekwa mbele yetu na Papa Paulo VI akisema “sisi twasadiki ushirika wa waamini wote wa Kristo, wa wale walio bado safarini duniani, wa wale waliokufa ambao wanapata utakaso, wa wale wenye heri ya mbingu, wote pamoja hufanya Kanisa moja tu. Nasi twasadiki kwamba katika umoja huu, mapendo ya huruma ya Mungu na ya watakatifu wake yasikiliza daima sala zetu” (KKK 962) Ndiyo kusema kuwaombea marehemu ni sehemu ya imani yetu, ni upendo kwa jirani tukiitikia injili ya Bwana ya kumsaidia aliye katika taabu, aliyemhitaji.
Kuwaombea marehemu ni kielelezo kimojawapo cha imani yetu katika ufufuko, kwa maana kama hatusadiki yakuwa Kristu alikufa na kufufuka imani yetu ni bure. Ni kutokana na msingi huo twaamini kwamba wale waliolala usingizi katika Yesu Kristo mfufuka, parapanda ya Mungu ikilia watafufuliwa kwanza nasi tuliosalia tutanyakuliwa kwa kuwafuata wao.
Kuwaombea marehemu ni jambo la thamani na la imani ambalo si la leo bali limekuwepo katika safari ya wokovu. Tunasoma daima katika kitabu cha pili cha Wamakabayo kuwa Yuda kiongozi wa Wayahudi alichanga fedha kwa kila mtu jumla drakma mbili elfu, akazipeleka Yerusalemu kutoa sadaka ya dhambi. Kwa kufanya hivi alitenda vema na kwa haki kwa kuwa aliukumbuka ufufuo wa wafu. Alifanya hili kwa sababu ya imani na kama asingekuwa na imani kuwa wafu watafufuliwa ingekuwa upumbavu na kazi bure kuwaombea marehemu. (Rej. 2Wak. 12: 43-45).
Basi ndugu yangu mpendwa ninakualika katika msingi uleule wa imani katika ufufuko, kusali daima sala hii “raha ya milele uwape Ee Bwana na mwanga wa milele uwaangazie wapumzike kwa amani, amina”. Ni Sala ya kujenga urafiki na marehemu walioko toharani na hatimaye watakatifu wa mbinguni. Ni sala ambayo yatukumbusha wapendwa wetu ambao wengine tuliwafahamu kwa karibu na hivi yatudai wajibu wa kuomba huruma ya Mungu kwa ajili yao pasipo kukoma.
Mama Kanisa ametuwekea Misa tatu kwa ajili ya marehemu wote ili kwa njia hiyo marehemu wapate msaada wa masitahili ya Kristo kwa njia sadaka yake ya msalabani. Anataka asiwepo hata mmoja atakayekosa huruma na msaada wa Mungu. Katika Misa hizi tatu injili zagusa Heri Nane njia ya utakatifu na habari ya ufufuko wa wafu lililotumaini letu na imani yetu tunaposafiri kuelekea ukamilifu yaani uzima wa milele ambao huja baada ya kifo. Tunasali na kutumaini kuwa, kwa kifo maisha hayaondolewi ila hugeuzwa na kuwa maisha mapya, maisha makamilifu.
Basi mpendwa mwanatafakari, leo ni wakati wa kusali na kuwatembelea waliolala kule makaburini ili muunganiko katika sala ukamilishwe katika upendo unaoonekana katika maisha ya watu. Yafaa pia kufunga kidogo kwa ajili ya wapendwa wetu ili kuisimika sala yetu katika majitoleo ya Kristo mteswa na hatimaye uibuke na ushindi wa Kristu mfufuka. Kumbukeni pia kujiombea wewe mwenyewe kwa maana kwakukumbusha kujitayarisha kwa ajili ya safari ya kugeuzwa na kuingia maisha mapya, maisha ya mbinguni.
Papa- Ibada ya kuwakumbuka Marehemu ni wito

Ibada ya Misa Takatifu kwa ajili ya kuwakumbuka na kuwaombea Makardinali na Maaskofu marehemu. - OSS_ROM
Jumanne tarehe 3 Novemba 2015 majira ya saa tano katika Kanisa Kuu la Mtakatifu Petro, Baba Mtakatifu Francisko, aliongoza Ibada ya Misa kwa nia ya kuwakumbuka na kuwaombea Makardinali na Maaskofu wote waliofariki mwaka huu. Katika kipindi hiki, Kanisa liliondokewa na Makardinali 15 , Patriaki I na Maaskofu 99 kwa idadi ya jumla. Barani Afrika Kanisa limepoteza maaskofu 10 wakiwemo watatu kutoka Shirikisho la Baraza la Maaskofu Katoliki Afrika Mashariki na Kati, AMECEA.
Akitoa homilia kwa ajili ya Marehemu hao, Papa Francisco alisema leo hii tunawakumbuka na kuwaombea ndugu hawa ambao walilipenda Kanisa kama mchumba wao, na sasa tunamwomba Mungu wa huruma , awapokee katika furaha kamili na umoja na Watakatifu. Papa aliendelea kuwakumbuka marehemu akisema kuwa ni wajibu kutoa shukrani kwa ukarimu wao wa kuitikia wito Mtakatifu, kama ilivyotajwa katika neno la Injili na hasa kwanza kabisa kwa ajili ya uongozi wao na huduma yao. Na kwamba katika wakati huo wa kutolea sala na maombi kwa ajili ya ujira wao walioahidiwa kama "watumishi wema na waminifu" kama ilivyoandikwa katika Injili (Mathayo, 25,14-30), pia sisi tulio bado hai tumeitwa kufanya upya uchaguzi wetu katika kulitumikia Kanisa.
Papa alieleza na kusisitiza juu ya kutumikia na si kutumikiwa, akirejea tukio la Yesu kuwaosha miguu wanafunzi wake . Amesema Yesu mwenyewe alionyesha wazi kwamba, kuwa kiongozi si kuwa myapala lakini ni kutumikia (Marko 10:45), na kwamba mtu hawezi kuwa mchungaji mwema kama hayuko tayari kutoa hata uhai wake kwa ajili ya kondoo wake. Anayekubali kutumikia anakuwa mtu wa kutoa, si katika vitu tu lakini hata nafsi yake. Papa aliendelea katika macho ya kidunia mtu huyo huonekana kama mtu anayepoteza, lakini kwa undani wake, kwa anayeyapoteza maisha kwa ajili ya upendo wake Kristo, huwa na nguvu za kukishinda kifo na kuupa ulimwengu uzima. Anayetumikia huokoa. Kinyume chake, asiyeishi kwa ajili ya kutumikia wengine huyo hajiwekei dhamana kwa maisha ya baadaye.
Papa Francisco aliendelea kuzungumzia upendo wa Mungu, kwamba "Mungu aliupenda ulimwengu hata akamtoa mwanae pekee ili ulimwengu uweze kukombolewa naye. Na viongozi wa Kanisa na waamini wakiongozwa na upendo huo hupata hamu ya kutenda kama alivyo fanya Bwana wao, kuyaokoa maisha ya wengine. Upendo wa Mungu usiokuwa na kipimo wala mwisho, upendo unaoendelea kuwepo hata miisho ya dunia. Na kama inavyo dhihirishwa katika Mkate wa Ekaristi unaotolewa kwa ajili ya wokovu wetu , uliopatikana kutoka katika kifo na kutupatia maisha yaliyojazwa na matumaini.
Na kwamba wakati huo wa matoleo ya Misa kwa ajili ya Wapendwa Makardinali na Maaskofu,pia inakuwa ni wakati wa kujiombea hata sisi tulio bado hai, kuomba neema ya kuimarishwa, kama Mtume Paulo anavyohimiza: kuyageuza mawazo yetu kwa mambo yaliyo ya juu na siyo kwa yaliyo ya chini (Colosai 3.2); kwa ajili ya upendo wa Mungu na jirani, badala ya kujali tu mahitaji yetu.
Papa amesisitiza na kutoa mwaliko kwa watu wote, kutojiwekea hazina hapa duniani lakini juu mbinguni. Asema huo ndiyo msingi wa kuyafuata maisha ya Pasaka ya Bwana, yaliyo leta ukombozi na kutuweka huru dhidi ya mashaka na wasiwasi unaoletwa mambo ya kidunia, ambayo hupita na kuteketea kabisa ndani ya hewa nyembamba. Na kwamba maisha hayo hayadai zaidi , ila kwenda kwake tu, ambako kuna maisha, wokovu, ufufuo na furaha. Huko ndiko tutakuwa watumishi wake kulingana na mapenzi yake, si kama watwana lakini kama wana wake wapendwa walioyatoa maisha yao kwa ajili ya wokovu wa dunia.
Na siku ya Jumatatu jioni Papa Francisco alitembea eneo la makaburi lililoko chini ya Kanisa Kuu la Mtakatifu Petro, ambako alitolewa sala zake binafsi kwa ajili ya Roho za marehemu watangulizi wake katika Kiti cha Askofu wa Rome . Imekuwa ni kama utamaduni wa Mapapa katika siku hii ya kuwakumbuka na kuwaombea marehemu, Papa huteremka chini katika eneo la Makaburi ya watangulizi wake kutolea sala zake binafsi, kuomba huruma ya Mungu
